In the 1930s, the Dust Bowl, a severe drought across the US Midwest and Southern plains states, killed crops and livestock and sent tens-of-thousands of farm families fleeing for the state of California. Today, an extreme drought in parts of California is drying up lakes and reservoirs, putting a strain on the electrical grid and has already been impacting the agriculture and tourism trades.
